Why would you butter a baking pan if you're going to line it with parchment paper???

I thought you buttered pans so the cakes (or, in this case, the pumpkin bread) doesn't stick. Doesn't lining it with paper do the same thing?

And can I use waxed paper instead?

What happens if I skip the butter?

Update:

I'd rather just butter the pan. It's a Pyrex glass pan, if that makes a difference.

  • Wax paper will stick. The butter helps to secure the parchment paper, then a light buttering on the other side will help to release the paper. You don't Have to but it all helps.

Whenever I bake a banana bread or zuchini loaf, I have my non-stick loaf pan that I simply butter or spray with Pam.

If I were to use parchment paper, I would not butter the pan. Instead I'd butter the parchment paper so it releases more easily after the baking is done. (I spray the inside of my cupcake paper forms too...)

And I would not use wax paper. While the wax on wax paper is edible, it does not make for a pleasant taste if you get that melted off the paper and onto the outside of your bread.

skipping butter will cause baked item to stick . yes you could use parchment paper but no not wax paper for baking the wax will melt affect the baked goods and burn at the baking temperatures.

I've never had a problem with wax paper. Just saying.
