Not fluent in Spanish a bad thing?
The majority of Hispanics have Spanish descent, that's probably why it makes them proud to speak the language. I am Dominican but my ancestry and surname is French, I've been told that my ancestor escaped the Haitian war to the DR back then. Because of that I found it more necessary to learn French instead of the Slavic language of the country. However my family still think I should make the effort to speak Spanish to them, they hate it when I speak English to them but french they seem to be JUST OK with it(their happy that I at least know a language besides english). I understand that American-Hispanics that only know English are discriminated (not that im against them) by native Hispanics but come on at least a Hispanic like me knows the language of his true ancestor.
Thoughts?

Learn it. Multiple language fluency is NEVER a hindrance. French is useful....but Spanish will go a lot further.

Stop saying that the ancestors of Hispanics are from Spain. STOP. Don't you realize most Hispanics are not white? That's because they're not Spanish descended. Spanish people are white Europeans. Most Latin American Hispanics are Amerindian or mestizo (mix of white and Amerindian). Stop denying their Amerindian heritage and thinking they're just Spanish. Also Hispanic means you speak Spanish natively. There is no such thing as a Hispanic who doesn't speak Spanish. The only Spanish descended Hispanic are the ones who are white (if they're not from another European decent)

Maybe your family is more comfortable speaking Spanish in their own home and that's why they would like for you to speak it also. I think that if you can it would be nice to learn as many languages as possible so it won't hurt to speak Spanish or try to improve your skills.

Spanish is the easiest language on the world, youd have to be mentally challenge not to know it. the language scks so much it has no spelling bees, and reading old spanish literature is nothing compard to reading Chaucer.
