What does "des" in destroy mean?

    No "de-" prefix here. No "stroy" to undo. "Destroy" is a stand-alone word. The original Latin word was structured like a prefix.

    It doesn't mean anything in English. Destroy is from the Old French "destruire" and that in turn came from the Latin "destruere". The "de" means "expressing reversal" and "struere" means "build".
