What can happen if I don't replace my pinion bearing on my differential ?2006 Dodge Durango 135,000?

For starters, the noise will become so loud that you won't be able to hear yourself talking. It will be a roaring, grinding, whining sound. It will also also damage the ring gear because these two gears are supposed to mesh together properly and this won't occur if the pinion gear is moving around. If the bearing gets so bad that it falls apart, all structural support for the pinion gear will be lost and everything inside the differential could be destroyed once the bearing disintegrates. The driveshaft ujoints might get damaged too since they are connected to the pinion gear by means of a flange.I wouldn't let it go too long before getting it fixed. There are usually plenty of videos on youtube which can show you the process for changing the bearing. After you remove the differential cover, you'll remove the Cclips so the axles can be pulled free from the differential unit, then remove the differential unit and the pinion gear is right there. If you've got tools,a dial indicater and patience

Source(s): If you have little to no mechanical experience, leave this job to a pro.Its usually between $200-$300 labor to get a ring and pinion gear swapped,so it should be less than that amount since you're only replacing the pinion bearing. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for years to come, you might as well buy a bearing kit and replace all the bearings inside the differential case since its already taken apart. If its a limited slip differential,it also wouldn't hurt to go ahead and replace the clutch packs too while you're in there. This will prevent you from having to pay somebody down the road for a job that could of been done at the same time that the pinion bearing was done. You also have the option of buying a complete differential assembly out of a junkyard vehicle with low miles. It is quite difficult to move around and install though due to its weight and length.Plus you have no idea what kind of shape its in internally speaking.
