Do you think that 5 billion dollars would have been better spent in the US rather than being used as a ransom for a deserter?

NOPE because the law of our land is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY! Did that law change? Did it? No? It didn't? Oh so are YOU immune to it or can you just randomly decide when someone is guilty based on hearsay? Do you have INSIDE information? First hand information? No you don't? You're just going off of information from what? FOX NEWS - OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WELL That sure sounds real LEGAL! YEAH! MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST FORGET ABOUT HAVING TRIALS NOW AND JUST CALL FOX NEWS and then we can decide. Yeah that makes SO much sense!
INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!
From now on all we have to do to determine if someone is guilty or innocent is to see what FOX NEWS knows and then we can decide for ourselves. That's wonderful Smith -- Great idea! Way to change the entire legal system! That's so much better! Great! Really neat Smith! Thank you so much B*E*E*I*T*C*H but I'm thinking that maybe YOU don't get to re write the CONSTITUTION or the ENTIRE LEGAL SYSTEM in our country. YEP I'm thinking that NO little Smithy doesn't get to just WHINE into existence a new LEGAL PRECEDENT.
INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!
Sorry little WHINY B*E*E*I*T*C*H that you don't get to change the very soul of our legal system. I guess you will be all cranky and whiny and will need a diaper change. Wahhhh Wahhhhhhhhh.... Oh Booooo Hooooo Wahhhhhh!

You have a right to an attorney unless Little Smith500 is cranky and receives some hearsay and decides you're guilty because Little Smith500 is lazy and in this case you will be left to rot and die!

The "subsidy" you are talking about is a legal tax deduction passed by congress. The oil companies make about 9 cents a gallon for gas, local, state and Federal taxes add up to between 40 and 50 cents added to the cost. Who is really making the "record profits"?
5 million or 5 billion, it was still too much to pay for a deserter.
