Could someone help me with troubleshooting a Richmond Powervent 2 water heater, model 5vrp40n?
The electronic ignition produces a small flame until I tap the gas valve assembly, then the burner lights. lights. If I don t do this, the powervent will run constantly, and the heater will retain the small flame from the ignition. Sometimes it will work as normal for a few cycles. It is 7 years old. Thank You!

it sounds like your valve isnt opening when needed. This usually means the thermocouple (a temperature switch) is bad and therefore the water heater isnt allowing gas to flow through (for safety). Tapping it basically may be forcing the gate open????? Usually the problem in these situations is the thermal switch. You need to understand your water heater if you wish to fix it but if you dont understand electronics and schematics, I advise calling a professional.

You have already found the problem and the solution is to replace the faulty unit. The gas valve assembly is not operating properly.
