Looking for a anti-virus to replace?

Greetings all, I had an email from Norton about renewal and having second thoughts, that Norton is not a right anti-virus for my laptop (considering it's too much of a crap to handle such a software and dying by the minute.)

Can anyone suggest a alternative?

What I look for is obviously a effective and strict against unwelcome guest. I also look for something that doesn't put a lot of weight on my RAM and CPU, firewall-little-helper, anti-rootkit and anti-spyware provided and I also hope it would be free (or cheap, paying 40 quid per year is a bit much for my budget.) I also want a anti-virus that scan downloads and emails for viruses.

Thank you.

Norton does have it's pros and cons. It is a pretty good antivirus program, has a strong firewall, but one big problem and why I never use it: it doesn't protect against malware. I recommend using Bitdefender. It is a pretty good antivirus program. It's also perfect if you never like to run scans, as it has an autopilot mode, where it will run scans and delete viruses for you. It's also not entirely a good idea to combine more than 1 antivirus program with another, as they can interfere with each other. I do use Bitdefender with Malwarebytes though. Good luck on finding an antivirus that suits you!

um, you do know norton is the root of every antivirus conspiracy about them being innefective against many viruses to encourage upgrading. basically they fudge against viruses and let them do their thing to make you upgrade, or at least they did at one point.

Go for a combination of either kaspersky (full) or avast (full) plus antimalwarebytes and spyware blaster (free)

kaspersky used to have a decent antihacker but they discontinued it because it was too effective and perfect, it let you manually disconnect IP's connected to the computer via the firewall, an ambolute, bare bones and perfect security, impossible to bypass short of faking the images displayed by the screen constantly every 60 refreshes per second.

Avast (full) shares a similar antihacker in its firewall functions, quite useful for blocking programs from accessing the net, which may be compromised with trojan horses but cant/shouldnt be removed, my word for instance has a trojan in it which slowly feeds the contents of my documents to some IP but word is permanently blocked off now. reinstall was impossible the horse messed the registry or something.

it has pretty much anything but you still need antimalwarebytes to cover where it is only "general purpose", which is the malware division.

Anyhow, those 3 together with either avast OR kaspersky are your best bet, avoid AVG, its game is self corruption preventing you from installing new antivirus software

also avoid mcafee, as it is probably adware, any norton products, avg, as it self corrupts and chews up cpu and interfieres with your cpu cycles (they all do but avg is the worst).

some nice small extras you can get include adware, spyware blaster (small standalone almost, non invasive scanner, doesnt do anything unless you run it)

Norton isnt good I can have Norton 360 free from comcast but I dont like it because it slows down computers and especially laptops I recommend Avast Free Antivirus with Windows Firewall I have it on all my devices and never upgraded to the premium and dont plan on it because the free version is good enough also if you want some back up protection I use iobit Malware Fighter Free Verison its worth it for some back up protection.

I use free Avast and free Malwarebytes for years. They work okay for me. But I do not surf porno sites or open links I don't recognize. Also I use the free Microsoft "Malicious Software Removal Tool" every now and then. So far so good over many years. AVG worked okay for me too years ago.

I do run a custom check every week to 10 days.

    Up to you.

I use AVG (Free Version) on my Windows 8.1 laptop.

    Works just fine.

I also use Malwarebytes (free). For NON - Virus Malware.

I second Comodo Antivirus, or better yet Comodo Internet Security https://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free... . You can use the free version to see how it goes. Whenever I used it, it ran very well; not only that, Comodo (in my opinion) supplies the best Firewall for the Windows OS.

i would recommend avast or avira. they are low on pc usage, and are quite nice on virus detection as long as they are updated regularly
