Alkaline Lysis - Why do we denature the plasmid with EDTA?

    The answer to any "why do we..." question is that someone tried it and it worked and it cost less and/or was otherwise better than the alternatives.

    I don't think you're denaturing your plasmid with EDTA. I think your plenty of EDTA is there to chelate ions that are needed by DNAases for their function. In other words, having EDTA in there keeps your DNA from getting cut into tiny pieces.
