What is the best way to house train a dog?
We just picked her up from the shelter and she already knows how to go outside through the dog door, but she doesn't really seem to understand that she is supposed to potty out there. She has had only one accident in the house so far. She does potty when we take her on walks. Any suggestions?

pee padds are a horrible idea. they don't teach the dog it's suposed to go outside.
anyway create a schedule for her. to start take her out every hour or so on a leash and just walk her around for about 10-15 min. when she DOES go to the bathroom give her lots of praise. As she starts to get the idea you can increase the incriments when you take her out, so insted of every hour, every couple hours. Also about 10-15 min after she eats.
as far as scolding goes, it's only going to be effective if you catch her in the act. If you walk into a room (or come home) to find she made a mess, yelling at her then or shoving her face in it, won't teach her anything. She wont be able to reason out WHY you're bad and all it will do is make her afraid to go period.
if you do catch her in the act, all you need is a simple sharp NO then as already said take her straight outside
also you can look into getting a dog crate, when you aren't around to keep an eye on her, keep her in it. dogs are less likely to go in their personal space.
fallow these guidelines and she'll get it in no time. It sounds like she already has a general idea, so a little help from you and it should be a snap

Take her out frequently during the day. When she wakes up, right after she eats, and often during the rest of the day. Stay outside with her till she does something, anything, when she does get all happy and say Good Dog, and give her a treat. Repeat for a week or so and she will get it. If she goes in the house, say a loud NO, and take her out and wait for her to do something and repeat above.
No doggy pads, terrible idea then they learn to go in the house.

Just take her out every hour and when she does wee, make a big deal out of it lavishly praising her. She'll get the drift.

Doggy pads work, keep a few in the house and let her get used to using those when she can't go outside.
