Wiring a ceiling fan?

I bought a modular cape this year with an unfinished upstairs. I just finished installing a ceiling fan in my livingroom. It runs off of a switch in my livingroom.

problem. I just went to operate it using the switch, and when i turn off the switch, my christmas tree turns on. when i turn off the christmas tree or unplug it the ceiling fan light stops working....? I knew the outlet below the light switch was wired to the switch, but now how to I resolve this funky issue?

What am i doing wrong?

Update:

there is a 3 way switch in the living room that runs the outlet. upstairs i found the 14/3 wire with a ground. i installed a junction box i ran a 14/2 with a ground to the fixture i went black to black white to white red to red.

Oops, sounds like you taped the wrong end of a 3-way circuit. No way to make it work as is. You will need to find a constant hot and a real neutral to make this work.

(There is one time when the white isn't a neutral, but is a hot. In a 3-way set up the neutral is not supposed to be hot or a traveler between boxes, but not everyone knows that.)

The switch at the top of the stairs is actually 2 travelers and the the 3rd wire is the switch leg to the light. No neutral present.

Sounds like a good time to make a list of all other electrical work you would like to do and call a pro to at least do the rough-in (run the wires). Then you could have a go at doing the trim out (installing lights/fans etc).

Of course it must be wired wrong. You have not provided enough information to solve the problem. I am guessing that your living room has more than one switch that turns on the ceiling fan/light. If that is the case, this greatly complicates the wiring.

    1) how many wall switches operate the ceiling fan?

    2) what wires were connected to what when you installed the ceiling fan.

OK, I am going to assume that power is coming from the outlet to one of your 3-way switches. The black wire coming from the outlet is connected to the "common" pole of the threeway switch. The black wire and the red wire from your 14/3 then are connected to the two non-common poles of your 2nd threeway switch. Then the black wire and a red wire from your 14/3 extends through the ceiling to the other 3-way switch. The ceiling fan then needs to be connected to the common pole of the second theeway switch somehow. This is preferably done with another black wire, but it can be done with a white wire that is called to serve as a black. In that case, you are supposed to attach some black electrician's tape to the white wire to show that it is being used as a black wire instead of a neutral.

    Good luck.

With a ceiling fan running off of a single wall switch, the fan runs on a hot wire so that it can be turned on with the chain switch without the lamp, and the lamp can be turned on separately with the wall switch. If that switch also controls the wall socket, it needs to be in the same circuit as the lamp, but bypassing the hot wire.

You get someone that knows what to look for to EXAMINE the wiring and find out what is done wrong. If unplugging something from the outlet cuts off the ceiling fan, your problem is bigger than what can be addressed online or over the phone.

You have too many unknowns and a lack of knowledge about electrical circuits. Contact a local qualified professional electrician to do the work. As an alternative, get a book on house wiring read and understand it but that may take several months.

You will need a electrician as it has been installed incorrectly.
