What does the snowflake/asterisk mean?

I just bought a GE dishwasher Model GDT696SSF0SS and installed it, but only the power button works. The power comes on, but all that shows on the display is a little snowflake/asterisk symbol. Unfortunately, the Owner's Manual is very general to apply (to multiple models) and is basically useless. There is no legend or key to explain symbols on the display. I thought maybe the panel was child locked, but, if this is the case, there are no instructions to explain and the only online fix I found requires holding down the heat dry button, but this model doesn't have one. I'd be thankful for any ideas. Thanks.

Update:

It turns out that you can only operate the buttons while the door is open. So, you open the door, then choose your cycle and options. Once you've done that, the machine will start when you shut the door. The asterisk symbol just means that the rinse agent level is low.

    Contact GE and ask...

I did. They're going to have a technician call me sometime in the next two days to make an appointment for a service call... meanwhile I'm washing dishes by hand, I guess.
