BOXING: What did DELA HOYA lack resulting to failures in big fights and how great would he be had he won all his fights?
Oscar got a pretty damn good resume winning titles in 6 different divisions only manny pacquiao beat. He had wins against great boxers and hall of famers such as pernell whitaker, julio cesar chavez, arutro gatti, ike quartey, felix sturn, hector camacho etc. He might have ended probably top 15-20 all time had he won all his fights. I mean I understand why he lost fights like him quitting on Felix Trinidad and regardless of what his cornerman says, he could have done more for his legacy. Sure Bhop was naturaly bigger and greater but had he boxed and kept distance which he obviously could then it would not have ended that way. Mosley was a superb boxer but hoya could have done more. Vs Mayweather he obviously just stopped the jabs and being more agressive. I mean there are reasons why he lost for sure but he could have done more.

If he had won all his fights there is a very strong argument that he could be the GOAT but top 5 at the worst in my opinion.
Think about it, prime Trinidad, middleweight Hopkins, prime Mosley, prime Mayweather, prime Pacquiao. Add that on to his actual wins that would be an INSANE resume. Ok he wouldn't have got credit for beating Pacquiao but the rest of the wins he would.
It's all hypothetical though, he is an ATG but not very high up.

He didnt lack anything my friend. He just had that bad habit of never finishing the rounds strong. It's what costed him the fight vs Tito although i believe the Golden Boy won that fight. It's what also made him lost the fights vs Mosely. I had him winning those two fights. But then again, Oscar had those gift decisions too especially against Whitaker and Sturm.

He would be inside top 10 greatest fighter of all time. Imagine a win against Floyd, PAcquiao, Trinidad, Mosely, Bhop? Man, Oscar would shine the brightest of them all. It's totally mind boggling

Boxing has a long line of champions who could have been considered Top 10 Greats had they won certain fights. The fact is they didn't and the label "Great" is tossed around too lightly, especially today.
.
In each of his losses, Oscar lacked one thing. Stamina. He gassed out against each of them.

Oscar benefited from good timing. He came along at the perfect time. He was the only gold medal winner of his class, primarily because the US team was weak at that time. He certainly deserves credit for rising above the rest.
.
I thought Oscar won the second Mosley fight and, of course, the Trinidad fight. He severely exposed Tito for the one dimensional fighter he is. However, I thought Oscar lost to Whitaker and the robbery Sturm suffered was as blatant as the one Oscar suffered against Trinidad.
.
A win over Hopkins is the only fight that puts Oscar in the conversation of Upper Echelon greatness. The loss to Hopkins, even with wins over the rest, still puts him higher but there are too many proven greats for Oscar to be at the top, especially against this group.
.
What happens if Oscar turned pro between 1978-1982?
.
Wins over Pacquiao and Mayweather would be great but they don't put him above Duran or Leonard. I don't see him beating Hearns.
.
Oscar certainly deserves credit for his resume.

Oscar was much better than given credit for.
The Hopkins fight, Oscar was way too small for middleweight. Period. He didn't have to even take that fight.
He fought both mayweather and Pacquiao in the very twilight of his career. Those losses really don't even count.
Oscar DID beat Mosley in the 2nd fight and he was also robbed against Trinidad. If Oscar would have boxed more he would have beat Mosley twice

If Oscar won the Trinidad, Mosley 1, and Hopkins fight he would be in the top 10 greatest of all time easily. No question.

Oscar was robbed in the Trinidad fight and he should have gotten the decision in the Mosley rematch. He had an excellent run from the beginning of his career at super featherweight up until that Mosley fight in his fifth division at jr middleweight, but I think he lost some of his focus after that and began to decline physically, and his record became spotty from then on. (note: it was later revealed that he was involved in heavy drug use at the time)
At any rate, if he had gone through his resume undefeated, he would have gone down as an ATG, no doubt, but I don't criticize him for falling short because I don't think there's any other fighter of this generation that could have done that, and I give him props for fighting the best, even when he was no longer at his best.

Oscars problem was fighting all the best in their prime. Usually after a fighter earns superstardom, they take winnable fights thanks to match makers.
Mayweather has done it many times. Leonard did it by waiting for Hagler, etc.
But Oscar kept fighting EVERYONE and wheen you do that, i dont care who you are, you aee bound to loose. Oscar, like Armstrong, didnt care that the middleweight champion was a lot bigger, and Oscar didn't care for a catch weight.
IMO Oscars resume has the toughest competition second to only Fritzie Zivic.

He had some personal troubles outside the ring. I mean, you know, with his money, fame and good looks, he was susceptible to all sorts of temptations, and they somehow got the better of him towards the end of his career.

He was just a good fighter and not a great fighter. He lacked the speed and punching power to be a great fighter.
