Can an adult take a 16 year old out of town with a parent's permission?
Someone I know was planning a trip out of town. We live in the Sacramento area and the trip was planned to go to LA. The teenage boy is the boyfriend of the adults daughter. He told his parents he was going to be staying with friends over new years because his parents dont want him dating. The fact that the mother of the girlfriend allows such behavior is beside the point. I am specifically asking about what legal trouble can the adult get into for taking the teenage boyfriend across the state (never leaving the state), without the knowledge of his parents. She invited him on the trip knowing he would be deceiving his parent to attend.
I am thinking she is at least guilty of parental interference, if not actual abduction.
I meant without a parents permission.

You mean "without a parent's permission," don't you?
This may be an issue on which different states have different laws. Obviously it's not an abduction, and frankly, even if the letter of the law states that the adult could not take the boy across the state without a parent's permission, it is highly unlikely that any court would convict if the boy was perfectly happy to go and wasn't harmed. Moreover, since the trip didn't cross state lines, there may be no violation at all.
You'd have to consult a lawyer or a police officer.

Yes an adult can do that because the 16 year old wants to go. But here is what the adult might be on the hook for. Since the parents have not given the adult permission, the parents are not 100% liable for any damages their child causes. They might not be liable period.

Abduction normally involves the concept that the person is taken by force against their will. IT ALSO can apply if the minor consents but it is without the consent of the PARENT.
AS a parent legal right, the parent has the authority of controlling the whereabouts of the minor, as well as defining who he is with, or not with. The adult doing the "transporting" without the consent or knowledge of said parent, is violating parental rights. In or out of state does not matter.
for that matter.. Sac to LA is as far as going out of state (if in a smaller state).

at 16 he is still a minor and under the care of his Parents
he cannot attend a school day trip without previous signed consent of his Parents
no consent he gets to spend the day in the school library
taking this kid to another city is looking to face serious charges
his parents are going to freak especially considering the fact the other so called adult is aware he is not allowed to Date and aware of the fact the kid lied to his parents about the trip
i would think possible consequences could be 1 to 5 years in prison and their kid falling under the control of CPS

Whoa, baby!
Definitely parental interference, probably contributing to the delinquency of a minor, if the kids had sex, they could be on the hook for procurement - it's really bad. As you noted, the only thing missing here is crossing state lines, and that could lead to federal offenses.
You should drop a line on them - this is not good.
