Should the government define which sets of people, in love, should be allowed to get married or not?

Insofar as married people derive certain government benefits from being married, the government certainly has the ability to determine who they give benefits to. Of course, this is not the question you are actually trying to ask.

I think that the government should not be in the position of giving out benefits at all. And I think anyone should be able to call themselves married. Whether other people can be compelled to recognize them as married is a different question altogether. It seems to me that some people want the ability to make other people accept them and their choices, while simultaneously refusing to accept the choices other may make.
