Hideyoshi was from a non Samurai family,so could never become Shogun - he basically ruled through fear, but he was an effective ruler.

His son Hideyori was only 5 when Hideyoshi died, and this created a succession problem - the Regency Council Hideyoshi had prepared for this eventuality was composed of rivals who would soon fall out and start fighting each other,so Hideyoshi's plans for the succession were faulty.

His invasion of Korea 1592-1598 ended in failure,Japanese forces becoming bogged down. This failure depleted the finances and manpower of Hideyoshi's Oda clan,as well as the clans allied most closely to him, divided the senior leaders of other clans, and substantially reduced the prestige of Hideyoshi.
