Would you be comfortable going to a doctor who gives his medical advice to you as allegory and metaphor?

Update:

Why do you think you wouldn't be comfortable with that yet presumable are comfortable with getting your spiritual and religious advice as allegory and metaphor?

Words themselves are almost all allegory and metaphor.

I assume then that you are maybe 13 or 14?

    Correct ?

In other words, we can't even speak unless we use allegory and metaphor.

The Doctor says, So what does it feel like ?

    Well, Doc, it's kinda like....

Doc says, Well just as a car needs gas, you need to eat more...You have [ Greek or Latin-bsed word] which is allegorical for.....

Stupid comparison. No one sees a doctor for spiritual problems, and doctors are not infallible ~ which is why they carry malpractice insurance and why getting a second opinion is so important. Why are you so comfortable with a field that has such a high rate of failure?

Jesus often used parables, allegory and metaphors in spite of the fact that many of his listeners were confused over what he said. He explained to his disciples that his words were spiritual and that they gave life. He often said, "He who has an ear to hear, let him hear..." In other words his words were only for those who were given the ability understand.

The analogy would make more sense if the doctor is omniscient and knows in advance that people are not going to understand his allegories.

The default position is to take people at their word. If someone wants to claim a verse means something other than what it says, the burden is on *them* to provide evidence.

Yeah. I'm not all that good with medical terminology so it would be nice to have a doctor dumb things down for those of us who don't have medical degrees and put it in terms I would understand.

Kind of like how the Bible does with spiritual things that are tricky for most people to grasp.

If I went to a psychotherapist, I would expect some use of allegory and metaphor and hints whose meaning I would have to figure out for myself.

I would not expect that if I had a physical problem.

LOL... well there may be some who are real good at this!! My doc backs this up with awesome examinations... to explore... sends me through all kinds of tests... and asks for my input and co operation! I don't doubt that God works in many ways mysterious way... to ascertain Truth for and with me... !

a carnal minded person will never be able to comprehend a spiritual teaching. To understand the bible you must think outside your personal senses and view things from a different POV / dimension.

If I understood exactly what he meant, as the people at that time did, why not?
