From his personal point of view:

Wilson was an idealist, and believed that if Germany, ruled by an autocratic Kaiser, won WW1 then this would be bad for everyone everywhere. The best way to stop this happening was to join the war on the Allied side, help them win,and thus "make the world safe for democracy"

Well the Germans were supporting Mexico and promised them to retake old lands from the U.S. for them, the United Kingdom (British Empire) intercepted this and showed the Americans. In retaliation the U.S. went to war with Germany. The telegram was called the Zimmerman Telegram. Another reason was when German U-boats started sinking American ships. Wilson asked congress for "a war to end all wars" and the U.S. declared war on Germany on April 6th, 1917 and Austria-Hungary on December 7th, 1917. Hope this helped
