They only got the Crimea to block drilling in the black sea by Ukraine. Exxon Mobile was to do the drilling this year. If I recall what I read in a pipeline magazine a few years back there is a huge gas field just off the cost. Billions of cubic feet. it would have released them from the strangle hold by Russia. That is why troops did not go to Kiev but to the Crimea.
Phase two will be the land link to run the Southern Stream Pipeline since Russia failed to run one around the Ukraine in the Black Sea.

Russian got Crimea by agreement on the entry into the Russian Federation. Crimea could afford it as an independent state reasoned of referendum.
I didn't heard that Kaliningradians want to entry into German. May be, enough to fantasize the impossible?...

Russia gets Crimea by the results of a local referendum, i.e. direct vote of the residents. That's not something unusual in the recent history.

Recently we've answered an identical question, hope those answers will help you:
And, yes, just like MARC said, IF Russia starts killing ethnic minorities... but She wouldn't, not Her bailiwick. She preserves cultures and traditions unlike those who genocided Amerindians, Australian aboriginals etc.
