Being put on a college class waiting list?

I'm starting college in a few weeks and I've been waitlisted in 3 classes, they all start February 17th and the last day to add is March 3rd if I miss to weeks of class just to wait and see if a seat opens up how am I going to brush up on what I missed? Am I allowed to attend class even if there aren't any open seats available? and it sucks because they say that after the first major test half the people who started off in the class drops it !? It doesn't make sense?

To be competitive on the wait list you go to class; the prof may even take the list or check to see who is there that is wait-listed. Some will add the wait-listed right there if they are present. If it is unclear on policy, you ask the TA or the prof-get there before the first class starts.
