My boss wants me to wear a tie, I'm a girl?

I am 19 year old girl, I work in recruitment/admin.

I am the only girl who works there, my boss gave us company ties, I did take mine like everyone else. But I have never worn it. Lately he keeps bugging me to wear it and I just brush it off.

Girls worked here prior to me, I doubt any of them had to wear a tie. I'm wondering if it because my boss knows I am a lesbian that he is suggesting this.

Not really sure if I am being too sensitive about it or I'm reading into it? He has made jokes about my sexuality, I do laugh, I am not the type of person to get all uptight about a joke! But he is genuinely serious about the tie. I don't really feel comfortable with wearing one, he says they cost 100 each. Thoughts and opinions please?

If there is no company policy on wearing ties give it back and tell your boss since you don't see customers it makes no sense for you to wear something that makes you uncomfortable. Then ask him to lay off of the lesbian jokes, say they've become unfunny and remind him about the company policy on sexual harassment.

    UK?

I doubt whether he could enforce his will onto a worker unless it was a corporate thing and has some history within the company.

In my view nothing looks worse that airline hostesses and the daft scarfs they are asked to wear, I note that some car dealerships have a similar outfit for their female office workers all it does is make me think 'Has she got an aged neck'.

What can it hurt to wear a tie? Refusing to wear it is a direct confrontation. According to the art of war, pick a fight that is worth fighting, choose your own ground, and fight if you are reasonably sure you can win. Another way to look at it is as a cost-benefit analysis.

I would ask him to stop with the sexual jokes. To soon they are not funny anymore. Maybe he has a thing for women wearing ties. I love seeing a woman dressed in a white blouse and tie. Just me thou. Use your own judgment. Good luck.
