Over time, on average a return of 8-12% a year is reasonable and without reckless risk. You can get that from the S&P 500 fund or Total Stock Market Index Fund - and with low cost and professional management. Over the last year the S&P 500 returned over 15%.

Some specialized mutual funds have done even better. A Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) over the last year (VGSLX) has returned over 22%. And a Health Care Fund (VGHCX) has returned over 23.8% over the last year. All with manageable amounts of risk.

Ironically the self proclaimed expert who constantly trashes mutual funds just said that these same funds "would be very good". Truly amazing.

% return is what you are looking for, no matter how much is invested. - long term stock returns are 8-10% a yr - don;t expect more than 6-7% a yr going forward

    $7,000 would be good.

    $15,000 would be very good.

$20,000 or more would be professional.
