Is tolerance condescending?

I was watching an interview with Penn Jillette about religion, and he said something I've never heard before. He said he prefers talking with fundamentalists rather than those who say things like "believe what you want, there are many ways to find god". He likes those conversations better because fundies will actually say "you are wrong" and it will lead to a productive discussion.

What I found interesting, though, is that he said he finds tolerance ("believe whatever you want") to be condescending. Whatever you want to believe is fine, but I know I'm right- that is basically what you are saying.

I think he's forgetting that some just don't have strong opinions, but what do you think? Have you heard this before?

(I'm sure when he says fundamentalists, he means those with strong beliefs, not the negative connotation that we give that word today).

Tolerance means, well, being tolerant of other people's beliefs, respecting other people's right to think differently than yourself. It does not imply being condescending or dismissive. I'd say someone who has the attitude of "believe what you want, I know I'm right" is more likely to be intolerant than tolerant.

I'm an atheist but I actually have more respect for Christians (and members of other religions) who are strongly committed to their faith than the ones who just go along with it to fit in with their family or community, or for tradition, or to hedge their bets just in case...

If you are a Christian and you really believe what you say you believe then that is not something you can just have going on in the background like elevator music, it should command every aspect of your life.

It may be in some cases but not necessarily in all. One can be tolerant without being condescending.

Tolerance and political correctness are a cop-out. When you won't take a stand for anything, you will fall to everything.

It can be. It is preferred to violent objection when silence or calm discussion is not an alternative.

Calm discussion that your friend prefers is better if it is offered, eh.
