Slow copying speed?

I am copying a 20 gigabyte folder with tons of word docs, images, video files, etc and for some reason the process starts fast, and then becomes incredibly slow. I am copying from the desktop to the desktop. Its all hard drive files, no internet or flash drives.

How can I speed my copying process up?

Update:

I start at 20 Mb/s then slow to 566k/s or lower.

no, smaller files just take longer when theres loads of them, if your getting between 40 and 100mb/s thats completely normal
