What kind of beer should I try first?

I am turning 19 very soon and I have tried very few alcohols throughout my high school years as I didn't really believe in drinking while underage. I have been doing my own research and the description of a Doppelbock is most appealing to me but the price is huge (10.95 for ONE 650Ml bottle) and I have to drive an hour to find a place that sells it. I am wondering what other beers there is that kind of match what I am looking for but a bit more inexpensive. I am not a fan of bitterness and I enjoy a thick wholesome drink over something like an IPA. I live in Southwestern Ontario if that helps in case anyone wants to suggest a craft brew. Anyways, thank you to any beer connoisseurs that answer!

Rule number 1. NEVER buy a beer you have seen advertised on national media. Good brewers spend their money on brewing good beer, not on making clever advertisements. So avoid Molsen, Labatt, Alexander Keith, Budweiser or any others of the ilk.

Rule number 2. Go to a liquor store and fight your way past the piles of cans of mass-market beers. In the back of the store you will find cabinets full of beers whose names are unfamiliar. Choose some of those. If the liquor store manager is any good, he will be able to point you in the right direction.

Rule number 3. The generic name for good beers in Canada (as in the USA) is "Craft". Not all craft beers are good - but most will be.

Rule number 4. Good beers usually (but not always) cost more than rubbish beers but what would you sooner spend your money on: 5 pints of something you hate or 3 pints of something you love?

Canada now brews some of the worlds best beers and not too far from you, in Quebec, there is a brewery called Unibraue, who brew some excellent Belgian style beers (and of course, if you cross into Quebec you will be able to buy them legally since 18 is the age in that Province).

Although I visit Canada at least once a year I go to BC and have only once been to Ontario, so my recommemndations are limited. Mind you, when I was in Toronto I did find some very good beers in the old Brewery district as well as a decent pint of Fuller's London Pride (an English beer) in pub called the Duke of Kensingon (from memory) - just across the road from the Sheraton.

Doppelbock as a first beer is like learning to drive in a formula one racecar. Start with a regular bock, either American style or European style. I think the latter will taste more like the doppelbock.

Other possibilities are the Scottish or brown styles of beer. Stay away from barleywine. That makes doppelbock look like a kiddies' drink. Maybe later.

here in the UK we drink a beer called budweiser which is a very good introduction to alcohol. It is a beer however it is not overly strong so as a newcomer to drinking you will be able to handle your drink without getting too drunk, too fast and making a fool of yourself.

I personally love dark beers like Guiness, but if it is his first time and if there is ... stuff.
