Gas hot water tank inlet/outlet lines reversed?

Update:

I bought a rental house. The previous owner had installed a gas hot water tank but the cold water enters the "out" side of the tank and hot water exits the "in" side of the tank. Will this adversely affect the performance of the heater?

Yes - will be considerably less efficient: inside the tank, one of the lines runs almost to the bottom while the other runs only to top.........so yours is plumbed to reverse where the cold water enters and the hot water leaves.

Yes, you will notice a difference as well. You're pulling the hot water from the bottom of the tank and putting the cold on top of it.
