Where can I find a good attorney to help me file a patent?

Update:

I have a great invention, but before I shop it around I want to get it patented. I have no idea how to go about this. How can I find an attorney to help me with this? Thanks!

Find a lawyer doing a lawyer search with the first interview for free. When you find the site you can pick what kind of lawyer you want to talk to. If a patent lawyer is not listed then interview with a general lawyer to steer you in the right direction. A patent search is expensive and cost my friend five thousand dollars thirty years ago.

edit: my friend's invention was an arrow with a radio transmitter in it so the bow hunter can track down the wounded deer with his receiver. I told my friend that is a crazy idea because the arrows would cost ten times as much as normal arrow and bow hunters are not rich. My friend ended up investing twenty five thousand dollars on his idea before he gave up.

Ask your accountant for the name of a good patent attorney.

Just FYI, you're looking at about ten grand, sometimes double that.

Did you really invent something that is new and not obvious to someone reasonably skilled in the field? Or do you have an idea, and nobody cares about but you?

  • Take several thousand dollars and hire one.

Patents aren't cheap and the cost of hiring one depends a lot on just what you're trying to patent.
