18 year old male high blood pressure?
I'm 18 years old.. I'm very active, I do lots of hunting so I do lots of walking etc. I went to the doctor recently about my heart said everything was good. My blood pressure is always about 140/80. My bottom # is fine but my type generally runs in the 140s. One doctor told me that some people tops run higher than others. And that they changed the normal blood pressure reading that 140 is a "ok" top blood pressure. I'm just curious if this is ok. I'm not overweight or anything either. Thanks

Most people do not realize that when your blood pressure is taken in the doctors exam room it will almost always be high on the systolic (high) reading. A couple of factors make that so. One; just the fact that you are in the doctors office is enough to make it high. It is even referred to as white coat anxiety. Two. That reading is not a resting blood pressure. If you stand up and walk across the room then sit down and take a reading it will be high. Part of that is postural hypotension and the very fact that you moved, meaning you were physically active. To get a true resting blood pressure reading you have to be sitting relaxed, not anxious or excited for at least 5 minutes. Take the measurement. Do this 5 times during the day, then throw out the highest and the lowest readings and average the rest. That will be a true resting blood pressure. Any sort of physical activity or emotion will skew the readings. Your blood pressure is constantly changing throughout the day, even from minute to minute. If the resting blood pressure is high... THEN be concerned.

100/70 is fine for a resting bp on a 16 year old but 132/80 is a bit high. It is understandable if you had just been exercising or vomiting, but otherwise I would get it checked on a regular basis for a month or two to see what is happening. (Once or twice a week). Try getting it checked when you have been lying down for 5 minutes, and then check it again a minute after standing to see if there is any change. Kidney problems as well as heart problems can cause BP changes. You were probably worked up over feeling nauseous to make it go up, but get it checked anyway. Good luck

Daily exercise is important and so is eating right and not being overweight. I think your doctor knows more than we will.
