Blood pressure?

I'm 18 year old male. When I'm as calm and relaxed as I can possibly be my top number is in the high 130s and 140s. And my bottom number is in the 70s and mid 80s. My dad has high blood pressure and take meds for it. Is this why my blood pressure runs high? Can this kill me at age 18??

Your blood pressure is somewhat elevated.

Can it kill you at 18? Highly unlikely. It's not in the range to cause a stroke, for instance.

On the other hand, it can be causing damage (slight but ongoing) to your kidneys already that, in time, could severely affect their performance.

No one's really sure all the factors that lead to high blood pressure. Being overweight and not exercising can contribute. It's thought that some foods (salt, for instance) also contribute. But the genetic link is uncertain.

    As your doctor.

    Hope that helps.
