How can I move out on my own as soon as possible?

Hi all. I'm in my mid-thirties and want to move out on my own as soon as possible. I work full-time but I only make about $25k a year. I have two college degrees. I find living at home with the parents is crippling me in so many different ways. It's hard for me to date women because of the living situation with the parents. They want a man who lives on his own in his own place and I don't blame them. I'm also unhappy with my janitor job. I want to change so many areas of my life very soon. I feel like I have to obey their rules all the time. My Dad tells me it's a "phase" that I want to move out to be on my own and I'll realize there's no better place to live than at home...with them forever. I say heck no to that!!! I've always worked hard and am very independent. I pay all my bills. I feel like I'm in prison living with them. The only issue that's keeping me from moving out is money. I would like to move into a nice 1 bedroom apartment. But cheap rent in my area is no less than $700 a month. I wanted to move out over 10 years ago but I didn't make enough money even at that time to do it. I need to move on with my life and get my own place. I'll be 40 in a few years. Please help me. Do you have any advice for me? I appreciate it. Thanks.

The most common formula landlords use to qualify income is requiring you to gross 3X the monthly rent, that would limit you to $694, so you can probably find something.

Certainly there have been traditions of multi generation households in some cultures, but I know what you mean about your dating style being cramped living with the folks.

One of the rental listing sites is Zillow.com, you can sort listings for your city in a low to high order, Craigslist.org may have individuals renting a space like a pool house behind their home which could be ideal.

I would hope you have saved up some money in the last 10 years, buying a house, even if that required your relocating to a cheaper more rural area might be the best for the long term.

im 27 years old. I live at home with my brother (25 years old) and our mother. I have to say I have it pretty good here. No rent, I don't pay for in-house food, I don't pay for anything other than my own bills (phone, car insurance, gas, clothing, outside-food) after college, I came back home and intended to leave within one year. My mother is the type (like your parents) who would never tell me I need to move out. I work one part time job making 29k-35k depending on extra work. I put money in my savings every paycheck, have a 401k and a Roth going. I have a girlfriend who lives with roommates. I will most likely move into a single with her some day. However, I don't have many other options for roommates, and like you, it feels crippling being at home. My advice is, try to find a roommate, share a 2 bedroom apartment, and live on less than you make. Look for better work. Live on less than you make. Save money. Find a roommate.

Its time to move out, even if its just into a shitty apartment. You can't be living with your parents. Come on. Drive uber for gods sake or find a real job. At least with uber you can make 60k a year driving and there is no interview.

I'm disgusted by your lack of initiative. what the **** have you been doing with your life.

If you cannot afford it then there is not really much you can do about it until you can get a better job. Most landlords will require your income to b e 3x the rent so you may not qualify for the $700 place. To have any hope of qualifying & surviving on your income you need to find a cheaper place.
