Why can't Jehovah's Witnesses just say SHUN?
Why do they have to use non-words like disfellowshipping? Why do they have their own cant? Their own little list of make-believe words and euphemisms?
If you are shunning someone, then just say so.

Their own lexicon is part of the mind control...loaded language.
They do both things, they disfellowship and then they take it further and shun.
dis·fel·low·ship: exclude (someone) from fellowship.
shun: persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution.
They disfellowship someone that, in their eyes, committed a sin. It's an official removal from the congregation. You remain disfellowshipped until you work enough to win their favor again. Usually months or years. Shunning starts immediately after this official action. You are avoided, treated as if you don't exist, no one will say a word to you. This is to manipulate you into wanting that back so you will work to earn their favor. Very damaging, harmful behavior...it hurts a lot of people. That's what cults do.
I think, deep down, the JWs know how bad this all is. Avoiding the use of certain words is probably about being in denial... or they want to try to hide this practice, which everyone already knows about.
EDIT
This question made me think of another question - /question/index?qid=20140...

I thought I would quote from JW.ORG; "If, however, a baptized Witness makes a practice of breaking the Bible’s moral code and does not repent, he or she will be shunned or disfellowshipped." So Jehovah's Witnesses do say "shun" anyway. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 - No hard feelings! :)
Edit: I'm sorry, with the benefit of hindsight I see this answer did not show 'mildness and deep respect' (1 Pet 3:15). I've edited my answer to better reflect this attitude. :)

They do not want others to know just how intolerant and controlling they actually are of people thinking for themselves.

Amen, and don't they claim to follow Jesus? Yes, they claim to be his best followers, but the funny thing is Jesus would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVVVVEEERRRR do that to ANYONE when he walked the earth and showed us how to live.
