    Poor presentation !!

    2^(- 5x + 1) = 1/8

    both 2 and (1/8) are base-2 numbers...

    2^(- 5x + 1) = 2^(- 3)

    if the bases are equal, the exponents must be equal !

    (- 5x + 1) = - 3

    - 5x = - 4

    x = 4/5

    check...do something !

    Do you mean 2^(-5x+1) = 1/8 ?

    If so, -5x + 1 = -3, and x = 4/5.
