auto transmission problems?
my father has a mercedes 1987 230 te model and the auto transmission has failed , the car wont drive any more although it will drive in reverse. would an oil change and filter resolve the problem or could this be a major transmission over-haul or replace-ment. ,this is his only vehicle to get him around. and now the car has come to a complete stop. cheers for any advise.

Being low on transmission fluid could be the issue. A simple check of the transmission dipstick will tell you whether it is low or not.

no damage already done. changing the fluid and filter won't do anything. you're looking at rebuilding the transmission or finding one in a junkyard

sounds like the loss of the forward clutch. does manual first work?
