Okay? Smart TV's - Do they need software security from hacks?

My sharp aquos gave up just before 5 years(display, no repair that could be done) grrrr! Now Our family is

planning on buying a LG or Samsung (don't know which) smart TV (connected TV to the

Internet). My question is since this TV will be connected to the

Internet and will have a native Web browser installed in the TV,

is an anti-virus software(or anti-malware) needed? And if one is needed which do

you recommend? Thanks for your help

The built-in web browsers tend to suck. I only use them for sports games that are only available via streaming. (TV's do not come with mice or keyboards and web pages are not really designed for across the room viewing or a 16:9 display.)

The TV browsers are non-standard and the OS inside a HDTV is NOT windows/mac/linux so most viruses will not work on a HDTV. All the commands they depend on to work - wont work unless windows/mac is the operating system. So you are pretty safe.

The Samsung Smart Hub got a outstanding review in Home Theater magazine. The reviewer streamed Hulu & Netflix from his Roku 3, and got the TV's app to stream the same show. He was shocked that the image on the Samsung looked better. Turns out Samsung runs the streamed video through the TV internal up-conversion & smoothing circuits.
