I will completely go against everything and explain why it is Load and Reload that really are Metallica's best albums. I list both because they were suppose to be a duel release, but because Metallica could not stamp their seal of approval on all songs in time, the decision was made to release as two albums.

Now musically speaking I must admit that the Black album (Metallica by official name) is the best by far. I mean the introduction of Bob Rock into the mix with Metallica's work ethic towards their music created a complete awe inspiring collaboration.

Where I define Load and Reload as Metallica's Best album is in the fact that these two albums really just elevated the band into legendary status, and secured their label as greatest hard rock band....ever. The reason why is because between the times of No life till leather, all the way through ...And justice for all, Metallica was basically saying "Here we are, this is who we are!!" With the Black album they were saying "This is what the **** we can do!" With Load and Reload, they were saying "Here we are NOW!" Most accused them of "selling out" with these two albums, but in reality they were doing the exact opposite with these two albums.(They actually have been accused of "selling out" since master of puppet days) They were simply doing the music THEY wanted to do, and doing it to meet THEIR standards. This is what metallica does with all their music. This is why they are the best. Anyways, these two albums reached audiences that their previous albums may not necessarily have reached. WHEN these albums reached those audiences, they were so great that the people listening to metallica for the first time just HAD to know what else this band had in their collection. Death Magnetic accomplished this as well, but Load did it in such an unique way. Many Fans today would not be fans if Load was never released. Its not because these fans don't like their previous albums, its simply because they never would have went and got albums such as ride the lightning if not for Load.

Also, where these two albums showed exactly how legendary of a band metallica is was through the critics. They suffered such criticism for these two albums, and yet they came out afterwards STILL renowned as the greatest hard rock band of all time.

To put in other words. Many of their other albums captured the hearts of their fans. It was these two albums that tapped into the soul.

"Kill 'Em All" is the best Metallica record, the one that started it all. The band played those songs live for years so when they recorded the album, they were able to make it sound like they were playing live - same amount of energy, intensity and the same manic feel as a live show. Those songs are all classics, every last one of them.

"Ride The Lightning" has the best production of any Metallica record, but the sophomore jinx got them and the album simply has a lot of filler. Tracks like "Escape" and "Trapped Under Ice" are just taking up space, they rarely played them live (for good reason.) The rest of the album shines, but it's not enough to put "Ride The Lightning" at the top of the list.

"Master Of Puppets" was the band's best product if not the best record overall. The songs are complex, intricate arrangements, the lyrics are deep, the sound is dark and atmospheric... All around a metal classic.

I'd have to say that personally I have always and will always love "Kill 'Em All" more because I have a deeper connection with that record, but "Master Of Puppets" is easily one of the ten greatest metal albums of all time, hands down.
