Well it suggests that living is just existing, with minimum joy or satisfaction. Like "going through the motions, but not really feeling it" type of situation. Observing life more than participating in life.Does not actively seek to engage in finding what makes life worth living. Mono tone.
Being alive suggests a person that actively participates in life, what ever it may be and is contented and fulfilled. Appreciates living life on life's terms. Is proactive and strives actively for a sense of well being.

As "murzy" says......Being alive is just the biological process. A sea-slug is "alive". "Living" in this context generally refers to being interested in, and invested in the various interests and activities and relationships of your live. Being involved in what's going on around you and in society and in the world.
To use the old quote from the racing champion..."Racing is living; Everything else is just waiting".
