Real Estate: Can I Do Both?

I just passed the California Real Estate Exam. I was an assistant property manager for 6 years in the city of Los Angeles, CA. Before that, I helped manage 3 apartment buildings in another state. Anyway, I see ads online saying you must have a real estate license in Los Angeles CA to be a leasing agent. So my question is am I allowed to work for a company as a leasing agent and for another company as a a realtor?

When you got your real estate license, you received a sales person's license requiring you to associate with a broker to be in the business of receiving commission from real estate transactions (as opposed to opening up your own brokerage). Assuming the leasing agent company doesn't pay you in commission you are free to work for the owner(s) completely separate from your real estate brokerage. But if they do pay you commissions based upon leases, Legally these commission checks would need to be made to your brokerage company and possibly be subject to the split negotiated by you when you sign on.

I have not heard of any legal conflict of interest issues, employers tend to want your full attention, maybe some commission only, make your own schedule agent work could be fit in with a regular job. Don't know if you can do more than the occasional agent phone call while on the manager job, seems like you need the flexibility ot get away to see clients whenever...

No, I dont think you need a R.E. sales license to show and lease apartments. That is up to the owner of the apartment complex. You are asking if you can work for two employers at the same time? I dont see why not. Why dont you read the CA Dept of R.E. for the answer.

As long as they are both aware and there isn't the opportunity for a conflict of interest.
