One third of a number is 2 less than half of the same number. What is the number?

Please show me step by step. Thanks!

    1/3 x = 1/2 x -2

    1/6 x = 2

    x = 6*2 = 12

    x/3 = x/2 - 2

    solve for x

    let the number be x............

    ......... therefore, x/3 = x/2 - 2.....................

    ................therefore 2 = x/2 - x/3.............

    .............therefore, 2 = (3x - 2x)/6........

    ...........therefore, 3x-2x = 6*2..........

    ............therefore x = 12. Therefore the number is 12.

    Verification : 1/3 of 12 = 4..........

    1/2 of 12 = 6............

    6 - 4 = 2!!!............
