Pointe shoe sewing?

I was just wondering why some girls sew elastic or stitches across the front of their pointe shoes by the bottom of the vamp. It's usually girls with high arches but I don't understand why

I remember some dancers with very long toes (or weak high arches) sewing a piece of grosgrain ribbon across the opening of the vamp but pointe shoes today can be found with high vamps, so that should not be necessary. I suspect they are just trying to customize poorly-fitting shoes.
