does anyone know if it is legal in florida for animal control officers to force you to kill your cat?
our kitty has been sick for a couple of months with the signs of thyroid problems. so since we have no money we took him to a vet that advertized free first visit. we told them we were broke and living on social security of only 1100 a month. they examined him and came back in saying they wanted to do xrays nd blood tests on his thyroid. that was going to be 600 dollars.
we took him home. he was not eating and having a hard time drinking so we started force feeding him both food and water with a syringe. friends give us some money so we bought special high protein food and drink and a neighbor gave us pedialite.
we took him to the human society because they would do blood work for free. it came back that he was becoming jaundiced because of his liver. but they didn't try to find out the underlying cause and just said to kill him. i read up on liver damage and everything i read said cats can recover in most cases on a high protein diet
so took him home and continued to care for him. he had some time with our grandchildren who love him and whom he loves. but he was getting worse. yesterday, we took him to a P.A.W.S. clinic. they said if they ran tests and it turned out to be thyroid, he had a 50/50 chance but we know he is a fighter, so said do it. but they would do nothing unless we paid them $120 which we didn't have.
we took him home. that clinic called animal control. they came to our house and forced us to have our cat killed or be charge with animal cruelty
you know, we had our kitty killed yesterday because we were told we had no choice, even though i read on line from vets and others that what he had could be cured and we were in the first two weeks of a process many online people swore by and testified that their cats recovered from. but it was going to take up to 8 weeks and the officer refused to give us any time to try...even though the vet at P.A.W.S. said he had a 50/50 chance but he is dead now so he has no chance.
the cat was already long dead when i posted this question. we are hurting as a family who lost a pet we loved very much and who was part of our family. my grandchildren wanted to pay for him to get better with their pennies, we did everything we were able to do....the last two places we took him are supposed to give free pet care, but they would do NOTHING to try to help him.
i posted this question to see if anyone knew if it was lawful for them to force us to kill the cat when there was still
hope that he could make it, not to be judged because we fought since he got sick 6 weeks ago to try to save him. if any of those places we took him to had given him thyroid medication, instead of being dead, he would be playing with his mouse now. you people are cruel and heartless.
final addition to this is that we really do not have any money. our son, who is married with 4 children to support, pays for our internet and basic cable. we have no cell phones, no luxuries. we drive and old paid for car and live very frugally. we took this cat in because it's original parent was a drug abuser who left the cat alone in an apartment with no food and water for 2 weeks. he was drinking from the toilets to survive. we took care of him for 10 years. he was current on shots and
had no health issues until he suddenly stopped eating the second week of april. he was making a weird sound in his throat when he swallowed and was throwing up when he did eat. all people in professions have charity cases...attornies, doctors, dentists, etc. we were hoping for help because we really had zero dollars, no money at all. we went to free clinics for help too but they would not help us. we didn't keep him from health care. we tried to get it for him. i was not lieing. we really had
no money. no one suggested any alternatives to us. we sat in their clinics with tears running down our faces begging the for help but all they were willing to do for us was to kill him. so, we ended up having him killed. all i wanted to know was if it is legal for them to force us to kill him. it turns out that i found out that florida state law is supposed to give 30 days in which to see if the animal can recover or have them put down. we were not given even one hour. so all of you are wrong.

They're not killing your cat YOU are the one that did that. You KNEW this cat was sick and DENIED it vet care which is FELONY ANIMAL NEGLECT. If you cared for this cat you would have given it up to a no-kill shelter MONTHS ago instead of just letting it get sicker and sicker. Now it's probably way too sick to save which is why they want to euthanize it. That's FAR better than dying a slow painful death in your horrible hands! Shame on you. I hope they also ban you from ever having pets again.

If you took the cat to a vet and refused to pay for service (for whatever excuse you have), and then keep going around looking for free vet care, but doing nothing. your cat was being neglected and now is in liver failure. Pay the money to put the cat down at this point. Don't get a pet unless you will provide proper vet care.
Sounds to me like the cat was sick for awhile - not just "all of a sudden" having liver failure.

Yes it is legal..perfectly legal...if you can not afford to provide the needed medical care required for the animal to recover and you dont want to put the animal to sleep then letting the animal get sicker and sicker and suffer in pain is called animal abuse and they can take your cat away if you fail to do something about the situation......no reason to let the cat suffer in hopes it will get better without treatment humane euthanasia is preferable to suffering....

I agree with star_of_darkness. You have money to have the technology to even post this question. If you are (which it seems like it) too lazy to pay for your cats health, you will either need to do the worst possible choice and get your cat euthanized, or you could give the cat to somebody who you know has the money to help it.

No need to lie. You have money. You can afford the TV, the computer, net, cable and cell phone and other luxries so yes you have money, like every one else who uses that lame excuse you CHOSE not to pay for vet care
You were too cheap, too cruel and too selfish to pay for the cats treatment which is illegal they have every right to seize the poor cat and have it put down since you cared so little for the cat you rather let it suffer then pay for vet care

So you are willing to let family members suffer becouse you are too cheap and cruel to pay for any care and expect a vet, whom is a business and needs to be PAID, to do things for free.

We are not the ones who let a cat suffer since you were too cheap to pay for any vet care and expected free handouts even though you could afford said vet care, its just that your luxries were more important then the cats life

So how can you afford the net and other luxries if you had no money? You could have sold off the computer and the like yet didn't. The fact you wasted time whining and begging for help instead of just paying the vet bill or surrendering the cat shows you didn't really care of the cat
They ddi the right thing which was to take the cat away form its cruel, selfish owners and have it put down since you refused to give the cat any vet care

Yes. When you cannot afford to take care of your pet and your pet is terribly ill and suffering. Yes, they can, and should. Sorry, but it's true. That poor cat is suffering. What you are doing amounts to animal cruelty.
