Two reasons why you should still study science:
First, as Simon pointed out, just because you are concerned for the poor, which is a good thing, doesn't mean you somehow cannot have any interests at all outside helping them. It doesn't have to consume your entire life and thoughts.
Second, you want to help the poor? Why not study science! Millions of people, as you said, are starving- wouldn't it be nice if we could genetically engineer crops with higher yields so we can feed them? Or develop new ways of generating electricity that remote communities could use? Science can help the poor a lot- and if you study hard and get a good job, you will have money to donate to charity, or even work out in poor communities yourself.
Finally I will ask- why is it only affecting your science study and nothing else? Do you feel like this when you are out with friends? If not, are you sure it's genuine, or is it just an excuse for not liking science?

It should be possible to be concerned about something such as the plight of the poor, AND do other things too. Sitting around wringing your hands and going into a somewhat self indulgent blub-fest is not really going to help poor people is it. Unless you're hoping to fail everything so that you can be unemployed and add to their numbers.

We will, as we always have before, have poor people in the world. If you feel that you are called to help them, by a higher power or by your own heart, HELP THEM. This is one of things that doesn't 'just get taken care of'. It's up to those who feel it in their heart to act in their favor.
If it is getting in the way of your studying, make a realistic plan to help them, just after your exams. A real plan that you will follow through with, even if it's only helping out in a shelter or kitchen.

Your best chance of actually being able to help the poor is to become a scientist. It is THE solution to most human problems.

We are able to feed 7 billion people because of science. We are able to cure most of the diseases of poverty because of science. Now get back to work so that one day you can make your contribution.

You're heading the right direction then. In only a couple of more years you'll be able to remind them that they may want fries with their meal.

Borrow a page from Republicans and just say, "F*ck the poor!"
