Yes, I agree with the other answerer, brackets are needed.
P = 3 + (5 / (4-a))
Multiply both sides by (4-a)
P(4 - a) = 3 (4 - a) + 5
Subtract 3 (4 - a)
P(4 - a) - 3(4 - a) = 5
Grouping in pairs
(P - 3)(4 - a) = 5
Divide by (P - 3)
4 - a = 5 / (P - 3)
Subtract 4
- a = 5 / (P - 3) - 4
Divide by - 1
a = - ( 5 / (P - 3) - 4 )
= - 5 / (P - 3) + 4

If you meant what you wrote, then a = 3 + 5/4 - P.
But if you meant P = 3 + 5/(4-a),
then you should've typed the parentheses, and
4P - 4a = 12 - 3a + 5 =>
a = 4P - 17.
