Prepping an apartment for a person with cat allergies?
Our dear friend, who is extremely allergic to cats (among most everything else) is coming over for Thanksgiving. Obviously, this is pretty far away, but I like to be prepared.
We have two cats, so I want to know what specifically we'll need to do to minimize the chances of an allergic reaction. It's 50/50 on whether we'll be able to put the cats in the master bedroom, as we'll also have a new baby at the time and I kind of sort of really don't want them in the same room as my child's crib (currently only one of them is hardheaded enough to still come in there, and only when Dad isn't home). Unfortunately, this and the bathroom are the only two rooms with doors.
We may possibly put them in an animal hotel for the holiday if we don't work out the cats/crib situation (good chance we'll move the crib to sissy's room).
Must add, our cats CANNOT be allowed to roam around the house when our friend is here. They're super friendly, and will rub all over people and/or walk on top of them if allowed. And the big one does not care if you don't like it, he'll sit as close to you as possible and even on your feet if you don't move them.
Being in the house won't kill our friend, but one of them touching her would probably cause a serious problem.

This won't help. Cat dander is already imbedded in all the towels, bedding, drapes, carpets, etc. You need to get rid of the cats and all their accessories, shampoo all carpeting, wash all towels, bedding, clothing, dry clean all drapes, replace furnace filter, wash down all walls and ceilings and hope to have made a substantial difference. This is no minor undertaking if the person has moderate to severe allergy.

If this person is highly allergic to cats they shouldn't come to your home at all. Do you have central air and heat? If so dander will be in the dust and circulating through your home.
If you don't have central air/heat it would take LOTS and LOTS of cleaning to make sure EVERY SURFACE OF YOUR HOME is free of dander. You also would have to remove the cats from the home while she's there.
