Can you recommend some modern classical songs from the last ten or twenty years of the 20th century to today?

And yes--I mean "songs". I don't want choir pieces, unless they happen to be a solo aria from a larger work. I just want to become more familiar with the work of contemporary composers of art songs. I know the work and really love the work of composer Jake Heggie, and Eric Whitacre has written some lovely solo songs as well. I'm asking HERE, so I don't get any songs written for Celtic Woman or Sarah Brightman. Nothing WRONG with those songs, but I'm looking for real classical

songs .Any range, any voice category will do, since I'm looking for things to listen to for my enjoyment and education.

Thank you to everyone who took time to give suggestions. My choice is probably very conventional as music goes, but is more of what I was looking for. I'm not a big fan of minimalism--especially longer works--my mind wanders. I should listen to some more of it to expand my horizons a bit, but I keep thinking the "record" is stuck.

    James MacMillan - Three Scottish Songs (high voice and piano, 1991-95). MacMillan has also written several pieces for voice and various ensembles; I don't know any of them at all well (or in some cases at all), but he's always worth listening to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions...

    Arvo Pärt has written a few pieces for solo voice or voices; I like "My Heart is in the Highlands" (countertenor and organ, 2000).

    A few relative obscurities from outside your timeframe: Britten - A Birthday Hansel (tenor and harp, 1975); Michael Tippett - Songs for Ariel (voice and piano or harpsichord, 1964); Richard Rodney Bennett - Tom O'Bedlam's Song (voice and cello, 1961); and Priaulx Rainier - Cycle for Declamation (unaccompanied tenor, 1954).

    Go to amazon.com and search under Ricky Ian Gordon, Dominick Argento, Jack Beeson, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, William Bolcom, Richard Danielpour, Thomas Pasatieri, Andre Previn for song recital CDs. I was surprised to learn how many songs Gordon has composed. You can check on Wikipedia for song titles listed underneath each of these composers biographies.

    I really did mean SONGS and I specifically said I was not interested in any new age, crossover type of music (which is what "Penguin Cafe" apparently does--plus it's a group, which I did want either). Ironically I did find an aria from an opera by Glass.

    If you want some music that has a bit of vocals mixed in with a fast and constant harmony, Steve Reich is perfect! Music for 18 musicians!
