Is New Orleans Sinking?

I'm a Canadian city girl, and it has been my DREAM for YEARS now to visit and LIVE in New Orleans. Every time I think about it, my heart hurts, that's how bad I yearn to go there. However, when I brought up the topic to one of my friends he told me that it's sinking...I went online and tried to do some research but I kept getting that blasted song "New Orleans is Sinking" by Tragically Hip. So, anyone from NOLA have any information on this? Is it worth the move from Toronto to New Orleans?I absolutely LOVE the rich history and culture of the city...I know more about the History of New Orleans than I do my own city. I love the accent ESPECIALLY when the men say "baby" lol...It also doesn't hurt that my favorite artist August Alsina is from there. <3

I live in NOLA. 80% of New Orleans is at or below sea level. But, although there is some subsidence, it is not sinking. A lot of the city is, after all, is built on reclaimed swamp. That said, I doubt you can move all that easily from Canada to the US. BTW, we all don't have the same accent. Our accents depend on neighborhood, upbringing and a couple of other factors.

Since you are Canadian and not American, you aren't going to be able to work in New Orleans, not legally, unless you are highly educated and get a job offer from a US company. Why not just visit? It may be sinking, but it's not like it's going to vanish in the next 5 years. Venice has been sinking for centuries and it's still here. And I don't know why you couldn't find info on it. I googled "new orleans sinking" and 10 seconds later was reading an article on it. The first page up had 6 such articles.

New Orleans is already below sea level and will always be that way; there are protections set up so that water doesn't come in. During Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, the protection was broken, which is why New Orleans was flooded.

  • We've been there many times. We always camp in the state parks south of town. Our favorite place is the French Quarter, riding into the swamp areas and along both sides of the river to the end. After a few late nights on Bourbon Street I'll swear everything sunk to a new low! My wife even won a contest at the Hustler Club. I think it was for yodeling! She's the blonde. I'm there someplace

Yes, New Orleans is sinking but at a very slow pace, N.O. will be around for many decades maybe even a few hundred unless a major hurricane hits.
