I would like some suggestions on how to get rid of stale old people smell from a bedroom. My mother moved to a home a year ago.?
My mother moved to an assisted living a year ago and no matter how much Febreeze I use there seems to be a few small spots in her bedroom that still smell. Her old mattress does not smell as it was well protected. The windows have been wide open for a year but I still get a whiff now and then. Any thoughts.
I discovering my mother used a bucket in the middle of the night to avoid getting up and apparently spilled it on the carpet once and hid it by putting a foam backed mat over the stain. When I lifted that mat for the carpet cleaner, the stink assaulted me. That mat got dumped ASAP and once the carpet was cleaned and deodorized professionally, the smell was gone.

Fabreeze? lol, you're just covering the smell.
It's like cigarette smell you have to wash the curtains, wash the rug or remove it entirely (since some of the smell could have gotten into the sponge underneath the carpeting, repaint the room, get rid of the old clothes and things she owned (do you really want to do that right now?), some of that smell is just aging skin and it happens to everyone as they age. When you say there are a few small spots, like where would those be? Sometimes older people go to the rest home because of bladder problems. There are some pet stain/smell removers you might want to try, spraying directly on the smell.

I would bet that there was some urine on the floor at some point. You need to do a deep cleaning. Move all the furniture out of the room and everything out of the closet so you can see the entire floor. If you have carpet, call a professional carpet cleaning company. If tile or hardwood, get a steam type floor cleaner and use it. If you have not taken down all curtains and washed them, do so. Then get a good all purpose cleaner and wash the walls and baseboard. Odors cling to all kinds of surfaces. Also, wash down any furniture. And even though you don't think her mattress would smell, I would get rid of it and the box spring and get a new one.

Make sure you wash the bed right all the sheets and if that doesn't work wash the mattress as well and also wash everything else that smells like that and put some atomatic air freshener in the room

The only thing I can think of is try bringing lots of smells into the room like spray a ton of things and maybe eat fast food in there

Hire a cleaning service probably cost you about $70 dollars, throw out any bedding all together and box up any left over clothing and let the service do the rest.

Make sure the room is well ventilated. Even just opening windows to let in fresh air will help.

Paint or wash the walls... wipe down wood work with Murphy's oil soap, shampoo carpet. that should do it.
