Separating lights and darks in laundry?
I've been doing my own laundry for about two years and I've never separated them. I always just throw them in and the default temperature is warm/cold, I don't really know what that does, it's just the default setting on the machine. The only thing I change is medium spin speed and that's just because if I don't change it the whole house will shake. Is it because I usually only wear cotton and denim and I put the machine on cotton wash. I don't wear a lot of white other than my socks and a few t shirts I wear to bed, but they're still white. Basically I want to know if it's the machine or the clothes so when I use a different machine I'll know if I should actually separate them.
Thank you. Sorry I kinda started to ramble.

Yeah, agree with Gramps, initially new clothes will lose color which will settle on white and other light colors. Cool water wash is also the least likely to cause colors to bleed.........another saving factor for you. But who cares if the socks aren't sparkling white.........my husband doesn't so all gets washed together as the clothes are worn down enough to be safe. I, being a bit more picky, do separate my colors.

Separate by similar fabric type and color, otherwise you are likely to end up with the pink underwear syndrome or linting nightmare. Hot water is not really necessary. It sets a lot stains. Warm water is cool (no pun intended) and cold water is best for least amount of fading and energy savings

the temperature setting, when it's on "warm/cold" will wash in warm water and rinse in cold only....separating colors from whites normally is done when a new item of clothing is washed because the color of the item could "bleed" onto the white clothes - you probably have seen a white t shirt that is pink ?? that is from washing a red color item in with whites
