umm to clear things up in case you weren't aware, a 4x4 is a car that is typically 2 wheel drive which at times cap power all 4 wheels.
pickup trucks and larger SUVs are typical vehicles for 4x4. they for the most part run rear wheel drive (some smaller SUVs may use FWD) and activate 4x4 either when the traction system recognizes that the wheels are sliding, or if the driver activates 4x4 usually with a dial or buttons inside the cabin.
AWD on the other hand is full time power to the 4 wheels. there is no switching just power at all times.
AWD systems are more common on smaller vehicles like cars and light SUVs.
4x4 is better for off roading and fuel economy but takes up a lot of room and is quite heavy which is why its best suited for larger SUVs and pickup trucks.
AWD is best suited for maximizing on road traction which is why its mainly used in more premium cars like Audis, Mercedes 4Matic, BMW xDrive, Subaru and similar.
the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is 4x4. I checked out specs of all model years between 1997 and 2004 and none of the models have AWD, they are 4x4.

4WD. AWD systems don't have a 4W LOW. You can't drive it in 4WD if you're on dry pavement. Snow, ice, sand, or mud only.
