    Fairy Tail

    - Generic big battle shounen anime, like Naruto or One Piece. Not many (or any, really) characters die, and battles tend to be won through the power of friendship. Lots of happy/comedic/silly moments. Main characters always win. Bad guys are always clearly bad.

    - Energy system is simply "magic", which certain people are born with and can use. Not a lot of explanation of how magic really works, but still watchable. Powers tend to be rather generic.

    - Has pretty decent animation for a shounen series.

    - Has a considerable amount of fan service; at least, more than in other big battle shounen anime.

    - Manga and anime are both still ongoing.

Hunter x Hunter (the 2011 Madhouse version)

    - Shounen anime, but quite different than Naruto or One Piece. The storyline is generally darker and more mature. Battles are won through skill, and a lot more characters actually die than is typical of a big battle shounen series. Main characters don't necessarily always win. Bad guys might just be misunderstood.

    - Energy system has an interesting take on it, that everyone is born with but only certain people can "awaken" and use. Detailed explanation of how the system works. Powers can be a bit generic, but some people have pretty creative abilities.

    - Has pretty good animation.

    - No real fan service, except for a certain clown...

    - Anime has ended, and manga is on indefinite hiatus with no indication of when it will (or ever) resume.

I personally liked Hunter x Hunter more than I did Fairy Tail, but that's because I like serious stories and, for me, HxH had a more interesting premise. Fairy Tail is still watchable, though, but takes a lot longer to get through to the main, overarching plot, so it may feel like some arcs are unrelated to each other at first.

I'm probably biased, but I would recommend the sub for Fairy Tail because it's further ahead than the dub.
