Parents, how far would you let your 16 year old child go with their friends on a trip, and for how long?

At 16, my son is not considered a child, he's legally considered an adult as 16 is the age of majority here. Parents in the US seem to think 'no way, they're still a child, blah, blah, blah'. The law varies throughout the world. 16 Year olds here are legally adults and are treated that way.

My son's 17 and from when he turned 16, he can do whatever he wants. He can move out, he can travel the world, he can come and go as he pleases (as long as he respects me and my home if he's still living here).

It really depends. School sanctioned? Chaperoned? To the lake to do whatever they choose without any supervision?

I have a child who has recently turned seventeen. Over the last three years, she has been part of an academic competition team, requiring multiple trips throughout the year, both in state and out. The trips are chaperoned, with both schedule activities and free time. We haven't had a bit of trouble sending her during the three years, or her younger brother in the last year.

If it were an unchaperoned trip, I wouldn't even allow one overnight. Now that she is seventeen, I might allow a trip to the lake, water park, or amusement park for an afternoon, and depending on the kids she was going with might permit her to stay after dark, but she'd still have to follow her regular curfews. I'm not that comfortable with a bunch of inexperienced drivers on highway or secondary roads after dark.

This is just the rule for my daughter

Which is no more than 4 hours away if there are any boys there must be a parent taking them and staying with them.

A max of 5-7 days although my daughter is very mature this is still the rule for people under 18 in my house

It all depends on how mature s/he is, but 3 hours in distance and for a week end to four days max.

Depends on your idea of a trip.

To the mall which is like 10-20mins away and for a couple hours. My son is only 2 and I already know I wouldn't let him go far when he is older.
