Two questions (USB and using USB on a hard drive)?

Two questions here.

1. I have a couple of 'dead' computers with IDE drives and the like. If I pull the hard drives (lots of pictures and other files I would like to copy to my current computer) and use a adapter cable that goes from the hard drive to a USB port will it work? I've since found out that the voltage on the USB port may not be enough to run a hard drive from a computer. Any input on this?

2. Is USB 2.0 upwardly compatible with USB 3.0?

The adapter cables usually come with an external power adapter to provide extra power for 3.5" hard drives. 2.5" hard drive can manage with power from the USB port only. Any USB 2 is compatible with USB 3 but will only run at lower speeds of course.

The reason a power adapter is needed for a 3.5" drive only is to supply +12V as well as +5V.

For a 3.5" drive the spindle motor requires +12V.

Otherwise a USB port will drive a 2.5" Hard Disc unless you get to the very big one's and it may require a second USB connection

cant you just put the drives in the new computer?. Just have to plug them in, don't have to mount them.
